About West End Runners

West End Runners, is a friendly adult only running club located in the East Midland city of Leicester,  formed in March 1984. The original idea for the club came from a community initiative between Norfolk Street Police Station and Leicester City Council.

The Club deliberately set out to be different than the then traditional Harrier style clubs by aiming to attract members from with a wide range of abilities and not just from the faster elite runners. This ethos remains today.

The first meeting took place in the back of the late Dave Lem’s running shop, transferring a few weeks later to the West End Neighbourhood Centre. The jogging boom of the early 1980s ensured the club grew quickly and In 1999, the Club moved to its current location in the purpose-built sporting facilities of Leicester Rowing Club. You can read more about the club history further down this page.

One of the initial aims of the club was to encourage running of all kinds from 3-mile fun runs to full marathons, and this is still true today with the club taking part in the Leicestershire Road Running League, the Derby Runner Cross-Country League, parkruns and more.

The club’s main running night is Wednesday when we meet at the rowing club at 7:15 pm.

Location & Facilities

Leicester Rowing Club

Wednesday night is our main club night when we meet upstairs at Leicester Rowing Club at 7:15 pm for announcements before heading out for a run at 7:30 pm. On your first visit, we suggest arriving around 7 pm to allow time for introductions, etc.

The rowing club was purpose-built with the help of sports council and lottery funding and opened in November 1996. It is just off  Upperton Rd close to the junction of Western Blvd and the Swan Gyratory roundabout. The entrance is adjacent to the Liberty statue that used to stand on the old Liberty shoe factory.

There is off road parking both in front and behind the building although this can get busy. For cyclists there is a bike rack outside the Rowing Club; a good lock is recommended as the area will be unattended for most of the evening.

Being purpose built for sports, the rowing club has excellent facilities including changing rooms, showers, a large meeting room, a kitchen area for refreshments and snacks.

Saffron Lane Athletics Track

On Mondays, members-only track training sessions are held at the Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium. They are ideal for runners looking to do speed training and improve their race times. These coached sessions are free of charge to members, and currently the track fees are included in the club membership fee.
